Laura Carmichael

Laura Carmicheal: Born 1986

Laura Carmichael, Downton Abbey

A little different from the Edith we know...

Laura Carmichael has three sisters in ‘real life’ but says they aren’t nearly as catty to each other as her sisters on Downton Abbey. But Carmichael assures viewers, offstage, the Downton sisters get along famously. Laura landed the part while working in a doctor’s office. She was about to go on tour with a Shakespeare play in Dubai when she was invited to read for a role in Downton Abbey. Laura Carmichael didn’t think much of it until she realized it was a principal role and not just a few lines. And she warned her family that the person she was playing wasn’t very nice.

Laura CarmichaelCarmicheal graduated from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 2007. She appeared in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in 2011. Her biggest role to date is Downton Abbey. In the third series of Downton, Lady Edith takes a big journey, exercising the new found independence of women during the era. Apparently, Anthony Strallan suffers the brunt of her new boldness.
